CHAPTER FIVE

“I hope that this doesn’t mean that our rendezvous for this evening is off my little pet.” he said in that slimy, oily way of his. I could have smacked him clear across that leering mouth.

“I don’t even know your name,” I protested hotly, hoping somehow that Abdullah would believe me.

“But surely you must know his name Cherry,” Abdullah sniffed smoothly. “Every body in the Middle East knows your famous friend.”

“But I don’t!” I protested hotly. “I don’t have the vaguest idea who he is, to me he is just some masher who got next to me on the plane on the flight over!”

“A fortunate, a most fortunate, accident of seating accommodations.” The fat one agreed amiably. “It permitted me to make the acquaintance of our charming mademoiselle.”

“Very little with you is either pleasant or accidental,” Abdullah stated quietly. The two of them continued to parry words for a while. I didn’t learn the man’s name, but from the thrust of the conversation I could tell that they weren’t exactly friends. I was beginning to get a little bored as well as nervous with the whole deal.

“Perhaps I should tell you,” I interjected brightly, “that the Sheikh and I became engaged last night and I don’t know if I can keep my appointment with you for dinner tonight or not.” I threw the ball right back at Abdullah. Then I turned my most charming smile on him to see what steps he would take.

“That’s right,” he said pleasantly, taking my arm and tucking it under his. “We were just in here shopping for part of her dowry.”

I could tell that Fatso didn’t believe us. He stroked his chin. “Then this is to be a traditional wedding?” he asked slowly.

“Of course!” exclaimed Abdullah triumphantly. “Everything will be as befits a Berber princess. She will be decked out in jewelry and amber from head to toe.”

“And you’re going to hide that lovely figure behind seven caftans at the same time?” my fat friend inquired.

“Exactly!” exclaimed Abdullah jubilantly. “Everything shall be as it has been with us for these thousands of years.”

“A match made in heaven,” sneered the fat one sarcastically, shattering the mood completely. “Who arranged it, the C.I.A.?”

“Abdullah,” I pouted, “you haven’t bought me any earrings yet.”

The fat man sneered at me. “There may not be anything about your lovely neck to hang them on my dear,” he snapped and stalked away from us disappearing in seconds into the swirling crowd at the Medina. “Now what did he mean by that?” I asked wonderingly, putting my arm once more through Abdullah’s as we started to walk in the opposite direction. “I mean, just because I broke a date with him.”

“Come this way,” Abdullah said and steered me into a little café. Over still another glass of mint tea he had me recount the entire story of what had happened on the flight.

“Then he’s been stalking you ever since New York!” Abdullah exclaimed.

“But not all the way.” I reminded him. “Remember, he disappeared as soon as we landed in Casablanca and I haven’t seen him again until just now.
